Christmas
FM, Ireland’s All Christmas Radio Station has over
the period of its first three temporary licenses
raised almost €200,000 for its charity partners. It
has also raised their profiles and dramatically
increased public awareness for them which is equally
important over the long term.
The idea for the station came about (as these things
do) over a cool drink on a hot summer’s evening in
2008. The directors of Event Radio along with other
industry professionals decided to look at the
feasibility of a Christmas station for Dublin,
something which had found success in many other
countries. It was also felt that the opportunity
should be used to partner with a charity using the
goodwill generated by the station to raise both
awareness and funds. Thus Christmas FM was born!
The station first took to the air in Dublin on the
29th November 2008 and it quickly became apparent
that the concept had caught the imagination of the
listening public. Our charity partner was the ISPCC.
Christmas FM returned for its second run at the end
of November 2009, this time extending its broadcasts
to Cork City & surrounding areas. Even greater
success was achieved with more than double the
amount raised in 2008 for our charity partner the
Simon Communities of Dublin & Cork.
The third outing for Christmas FM in 2010 was our
most ambitious to date with our broadcast area
extended to include Galway, Limerick & the South
East as well as Dublin and Cork. Our charity partner
on this occasion was Barnardos.
The station which is staffed by over 100 volunteers
has now established itself as an integral part of
the Christmas landscape and is also enjoyed online
by large numbers of overseas listeners. At Event
Radio Ireland we are delighted to provide technical
and business support to the project and look forward
to even greater things in the years ahead.
