Like most people of his
generation Paul Shepherd’s introduction to radio
came across the ether via Radio Luxembourg - The
Mighty 208. It was only a matter of time before the
radio bug carried him to his first on air experience
in 1978 with Capitol Radio probably one of the
earliest specialist stations. Having worked with a
number of stations throughout the 80’s he became
involved with the National Association for Community
Broadcasting (NACB) and served as secretary to the
organisation. In 1991 was part of the group that
launched Anna Livia FM on a temporary licence to
celebrate Dublin as European City of Culture.
Following this was one of the “7” to found Dublin
Public Service Radio who successfully won the
special interest licence in 1992 leading to the
launch of Anna Livia on a permanent basis. In 2001
was a founding member of Premier Broadcasting Ltd
and was director of operations for the three
temporary licences. Was also instrumental with
others in 2003 in the setting up of the Specialist
Radio Association, a lobby group looking for greater
diversity on the nation’s airwaves.
Walter Hegarty’s first radio experience and interest
in music has led him to a DJ
career spanning over three decades. An authority on
New Wave music he presented a
series of 30 programmes covering the genre during
the various Premier FM temporary
licences. A founder member of the company he acted
as Programme Director for all
three licences as well as technical liaison. Was
also a founding member of the
Specialist Radio Association and co author of the
framework document. With a keen
interest in all things technical Walter also managed
his own IT company for a number
of years. Most recently he was responsible for the
technical restructuring at Net DJ,
Ireland’s premier online music service.
